On March 15, 2018, Toy “R” Us announced the closing of all its U.S. stores. They also announced that they were having storewide sales in all of their U.S. stores due to the closings effective Friday, March 23, 2018. At the Pembroke Pines store location, there was a huge “GOING OUT OF BUSINESS” sign right outside the building. Throughout the store, everything was on sale. They were even selling the store fixtures.

Although they were the top toy store in the U.S. for many years, by 1998, Walmart took that title from them. But what caused the huge toy chain to make this decision? According to their court documents when they filed for bankruptcy last September, Toy “R” Us says Amazon, Walmart and Target were the main reason for the store failures by deeply discounting products during Christmas time 2017. This is the time the chain stores were at their weakest point. But the debt started back in 2005 when Bain Capital, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, and Vornado Realty Trust bought them out.

Consumers can now take advantage and buy toys at great discounted prices while they can. At the Pembroke Pines store, there were no video game systems left, as they flew off the shelf at 30% off regular price. In the bike section, there were no more floor samples left. Every department in the store was having a sale. There were shoppers taking advantage of the great discounted prices.

Even though these heavily discounted toys may seem exciting to the consumers, there is also a downside to the closings. There will be approximately 31,000 store employees losing their jobs. You can no longer make online purchases as the website closed down for shopping effective March 29, 2018. And for those who have Toys “R” Us gift cards, including e-gift cards, they will be honored through and including April 21, 2018. So, hurry up and get your discounted toys while you can. Take your kids and make that last visit to Toys “R” Us a memorable one.
